It is the first of two enriched “Seaside Evo” Class ships with the latest available environmental technology, extended public spaces, more cabins and the highest ratio of outdoor space per guest of any ship in the company’s fleet, the parties explained.According to Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Cruises’ Executive Chairman, MSC Seashore represents “another proof of our long-standing commitment to preserve the environment in our ongoing journey to minimise and continuously reduce the impact of our operations.”MSC Seashore will be fitted, amongst other, with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system and a Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) system. The new build will also be fitted with shore-to-ship power which connects cruise ships while at berth to a port’s local power grid to reduce further the ship’s emissions.Other effective environmental technologies deployed on MSC Seashore include an exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS); waste management systems; ballast water treatment systems approved by the United States Coast Guard; systems for the prevention of oil discharges from machinery spaces and various energy-efficiency improvements – from heat recovery systems to LED lighting.“It is a real challenge in terms of structural and managerial aspects, which powers the impressive workload for the shipyard and the local area. We therefore are very pleased for such a celebration which seals the fruitful partnership with MSC Cruises and we are confident that there will be other similar moments in the future,” Giuseppe Bono, Fincantieri CEO, noted.last_img read more

first_imgWASHINGTON – Donald Trump is being encouraged to stay strong in NAFTA negotiations by people who aren’t normally his allies.Sen. Bernie Sanders and other members of the anti-NAFTA left held a news conference Wednesday on Capitol Hill where they demanded that the president keep his promise to drastically overhaul the agreement. They held their event as negotiators from the three countries met in Washington.“We are here today to send a very loud and clear message to Donald Trump: for once in your life keep your promises,” said Sanders, a Vermont senator and former presidential contender.“We need to fundamentally rewrite NAFTA.”Sanders expressed support for hardball U.S. negotiating positions like increased Buy American protections, and he wants to go even farther than Trump and not just water down the investor-state dispute mechanism in Chapter 11 but end it entirely. He also wants Trump to go farther on labour standards and to end incentives to outsource jobs. Those disagreements on specifics illustrate that while Trump and the left share similar rhetoric about trade, some of their specific proposals veer in different directions, raising doubt about how many left-wingers Trump could hope to win over in a ratification vote for a trade deal.Speakers at Wednesday’s event didn’t actually call for the cancellation of NAFTA, just major changes.Lawmaker Rose DeLauro recalled having tears in her eyes the night the House of Representatives voted for NAFTA and she said the last quarter-century has proven that critics who said the deal would undermine American worker wages were right.Trade politics in the U.S. rarely hews to clear, predictable partisan lines. In 1994, it was mostly Republicans who helped Democratic president Bill Clinton get NAFTA ratified. Today, polls show Democratic voters are likelier to support NAFTA, but not their elected representatives, while it’s the opposite on the right, where Trump voters mostly oppose NAFTA but most Republican lawmakers support it.DeLauro rejects being painted as a protectionist or as anti-trade.“We are for trade,” said the Connecticut Democrat.“We want to work with the administration. We want to rewrite NAFTA.”Sanders says poorly designed trade deals are one of the factors that have hurt U.S. manufacturing communities in recent decades and led to greater inequality between haves and have-nots.“It devastates lives. And it devastates cities and towns,” Sanders said.“Trade is not the only explanation for that. But trade is an important part of the decline of the middle class America.”last_img read more

first_imgCALGARY – The growing frenzy around bitcoin and other cryptocurrency offerings has prompted warnings from a range of financial heavyweights on the risks that current and potential investors should keep in mind.Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz sounded the alarm last week, saying that buying into the trend is “closer to gambling than investing”, while Canada’s securities regulators association issued a special warning on Monday about the high level of risk associated with digital currency-linked products.Top of mind for many is the question of just how big a bubble bitcoin is in. Virtually worthless in early 2009, the cryptocurrency hit US$1,000 by early 2017 and then soared to its current price of just under US$17,000, a 12-month gain of more than 1,900 per cent. The disruptive potential of bitcoin and its underlying blockchain technology is only helping fuel the speculation and could lead it to go higher still, said BMO Financial Group chief economist Doug Porter.“Bubbles start off with a very compelling story, a fundamental change that triggers a lot of enthusiasm and attracts a lot of investment, and often what we see happen is a good thing goes crazy.”“These sorts of things, whenever you get into the speculative mania, they can go a lot further and higher than many people believe is possible,” he said.Even those who fully believe bitcoin will keep growing and help to disrupt financial systems expect the price volatility to continue.“Even if there are corrections along the way, it will come back even stronger than before, so I’m not too worried about corrections. But for sure there is going to be volatility,” said William Mougayar, a cryptocurrency investor and author of The Business Blockchain. But with such an astounding run-up already this year, investors are turning to the debut of other coin launches in the hopes of repeating the astounding profits that have come to early bitcoin speculators. The rise of initial coin offerings (ICOs) or token offerings used by blockchain start-ups to raise money has, however, led to other risks for the casual investor. With little regulation and more than US$3.6 billion raised in 234 offerings this year according to CoinSchedule, a cryptocurrency and ICO website, the area has been ripe for abuse, said University of Waterloo associate professor Jean-Paul Lam.“There has been quite a lot of fraud already, with companies taking advantage of the frenzy in ICOs and investors thinking they can make a quick return on their investment and they would invest in a lot of these projects without doing any due diligence.”“What has surprised me is the frenzy with people not assessing risk,” said Lam.The SEC has already cracked down on two such offerings this month, including one by Quebec-based PlexCorps that it said raised up to US$15 million from thousands of investors since August by promising a 13-fold profit in less than a month.Another seldom-mentioned risk is as old as money itself: taxes. While some believe their offshore wallets and decentralized ledger will allow them to hide their gains, Toronto tax lawyer Evan Kwok said the Canada Revenue Agency is actively looking into the issue and could begin a crackdown at any time.Active traders of digital currencies will likely have their profits taxed as business income, while those who have sat on their holdings would be taxed under capital gains, said Kwok. However, keeping track of gains can become complicated, since the digital exchanges don’t always provide complete transaction history, while those who actually use bitcoin to buy real-world items have to keep track of those transactions as well.“Once you transact away from that currency, let’s say you buy a coffee using bitcoin, that triggers a capital gain, you actually used it and liquidated your position.”Investors also have to understand the basics of the technology, including the public wallet, private key, and how to secure your private key, said Jean-Philippe Vergne, co-director of the Scotiabank Digital Banking Lab at Western University. He said investors also have to be wary of the cryptocurrency exchanges, as there have been numerous hacks, including a South Korean exchange that shut down Tuesday after a cyberattack. But despite the risks, Vergne said it could still be a way to diversify holdings for certain investors.“I think for investors who are interested in adding maybe five to 10 per cent of their savings in cryptocurrency, which is a nice way to diversify and gain exposure to an up-and-coming sector of the economy, why not, it may be a good idea.”last_img read more

first_imgAfter a remarkable performance in ‘Sacred Games’, Elnaaz Norouzi gears up for its second season. Read on to know what the actor has to say about her experience working with A-listers of Bollywood, and what all the audience can expect from the much-awaited second season. How did things change after the success of Sacred Games? I have never seen such craze for a series or film. So, after the show went viral on web, things changed entirely for the better. People have started recognising me because of ‘Sacred Games’, and addressing me as Zoya madam (my character’s name)… which is pretty cool. Also, the fact that audience applauds my performance and doesn’t remember me as ‘just a pretty face’ is a compliment in itself. This is what I always wanted. Also Read – An income drop can harm brain Was it intimidating to work alongside established actors like Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin and others. Is there too much pressure of proving your potential and grabbing the eyeballs for your performance while working with A-listers? Initially, when I went on the set and started working with Saif sir and Nawazuddin sir, I was very stressed. After all, it was my first project with mega stars. But luckily, not for a second I felt that I was shooting with such established actors. Both of them are amazing beings and never treated me like a newcomer. Obviously, there is a lot of pressure to deliver my best, however even when I forgot my lines, they were patient and considerate towards me. All I can say is we had a lot of fun on the set. Also Read – Shallu Jindal honoured with Mahatma Award How difficult is it for an outsider to create a niche in the entertainment industry? It is very difficult… I don’t think I can define it in words. It needs a lot of dedication, hard work and focus to survive in this industry. To overcome all the obstacles coming your way, and prove yourself amidst so many great talents and star kids, is a huge struggle. If you could play some other character from Sacred Games, which one would that be? I don’t think I would want to play any other character in ‘Sacred Games’ other than Zoya and Jameela. There are many layers to my character which will be unveiled in Season 2. So, yes I am happy with what I have got. What can one expect from the second season of Sacred Games? One can expect a lot of new characters in Season 2. How the story is going to unfold will be crazy and amazing at the same time and just on another level. There is going to be a lot of entertainment. I can assure you that Sacred Games season 2 will be very exciting. Tell us about your role in ‘Zee5’s web series? ‘Abhay’ is a new Zee5 original web series which is doing exceptionally well among the audience. We are coming out episode wise and will have eight episodes in total. I am playing the main lead opposite Kunal Khemmu. The name of my character is called Natasha, an ex-cop who has an interesting past with Abhay. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal much because we are still shooting for the same. You have to wait and watch. An ongoing web series you want to be a part of? Made in heaven. I really loved it. A project you regret turning down? Thank god there has never been a project that I turned down and regretted later. Whatever I have turned down has turned out to be the right decision. Web shows or movies, what’s your pick? I feel web is not just the future but also the present. It has a much higher reach. So if there is a web show where my character is amazing and the story is relevant, I would choose it over a movie. An actor you admire for his/her choice of roles? Alia Bhatt.last_img read more

The Ohio state baseball team celebrates the team’s Big Ten championship victory. Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsAfter clinching an automatic bid into the NCAA College Baseball tournament, the Ohio State Buckeyes have been placed as the No. 2 seed in the Louisville regional, hosted by No. 2 national seed Louisville Cardinals. For the Buckeyes, this has been a truly spectacular season, fueled by steady contributions from both sides of the plate as they finished with a Big Ten-best record of 43-18-1. On the year, OSU ranked second in the Big Ten in runs scored with 362. The team’s offense was driven largely by their strong power numbers, where they ranked first in the Big Ten and tied for 28th in the country with 56 home runs. Another strength was the speed on the basepaths, where they ranked second in the Big Ten and tied for 18th in the country in stolen bases with 98 successful swipes. But it wasn’t just the bats that worked for the Buckeyes. The pitching staff for the Scarlet and Gray also contributed in a major way to the success of the team. OSU pitchers posted a 3.02 ERA on the season, good for second best in the Big Ten and 11th in the nation; a 1.20 WHIP, best in the Big Ten and 12th in the nation; and a miniscule 2.40 BB/9 rate, second best in the Big Ten and fifth best among all NCAA teams. In the first matchup of their regional, the Buckeyes will take on Wright State University, champions of the Horizon League. The Raiders have put together a strong season, posting a 44-15 record overall. They currently sit 36th overall with a 3.47 ERA and tenth overall with a 1.20 WHIP. Though WSU ranks 22nd overall in runs scored (424 on the season), they have few explosive aspects to their offense. The Raiders currently rank 95th in batting average (.283) and tied for 55th in home runs (46). Their offense has largely been sparked by a NCAA 20th best-91 stolen bases. That game begins on Friday, June 3 at 6 p.m. E.T.The winner of the Louisville regional will play the winner of the Vanderbilt regional in the Super Regional round. read more
