first_imgWayne Rooney has revealed his final days at Manchester United were embarrassing. The Manchester United all-time top scorer insists his failure to start the club’s league cup final against Southampton and the UEFA Europa League final against Ajax convinced him his time at the club was over.Despite having a bit-part role in manager Jose Mourinho’s squad, the former England international remained the captain as well as a living icon during his final season at Old Trafford. However, his reduced status in the dressing room meant Rooney was ’embarrassed’ to lift both trophies.Rooney told Sky Sports: “I came on for one minute in the Europa League final. I was about to come on against Southampton in the League Cup final, and in those moments it was embarrassing.“It was getting to a point where I was embarrassed. I thought “I can’t keep doing this”, as hard as it was to leave United.”harry maguire, manchester UnitedMaguire says United need to build on today’s win George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Harry Maguire wants his United teammates to build on the victory over Leicester City.During the summer, Harry Maguire was referred to as the ultimate…“In the Southampton game, [manager Jose] Mourinho came to me and said: ‘I want you to lift the trophy.’ I was like: “Well, I didn’t even play in the game.’”“He was persistent with it, and I literally lifted it and moved it on. What was I doing? I need to move on and go somewhere else.”Rooney called time on his United career in the summer of 2017, joining his boyhood club Everton with Romelu Lukaku moving in the other direction in a separate deal. However, his time at Goodison Park would be equally difficult and he made the move to the MLS this summer. He enjoyed an impressive campaign in the United States and his family have flourished in their new environment.last_img read more

But Escondido could have the cleanest cars in San Diego County: 28 car washes and counting.“We just need to look at this closer. Do we really need any more car washes in town,” said Escondido City Manager Jeffery Epp.This came as a big shock to the local businessman who bought a piece of land, got most of it approved for a car wash, then the city pulled the plug.“We did the environmental studies, we did traffic studies, who did everything needed and I was waiting for final approval. Then they decided to impose a moratorium on me,” said Wash n Go owner Neil Capin.Capin invested a lot of money in the old skating rink, a place that has a lot of nostalgia, but it’s been shut down for 10 years.“If someone wanted to build a skating rink, they should have done it,” Capin said. After the city council voted in favor of the 45-days moratorium, Capin still has hope.“What I hope is that the projects that are already in the works keep moving forward. I was almost finished with the whole process, we should be able to finish the project,” Capin said.“I don’t think anyone is telling him he can’t build it, We just need a time out, take a look. Do we really need another car wash in Escondido,” Epp said. After investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into the skating rink, Capin is not pleased.“Why would anyone invest in Escondido, when something like this can happen. We should be allowed to “finish” the project. It’s just not right to start a project and have them change in midstream,” Capin said.A final decision is expected within the 45-day moratorium. first_img Dan Cohen AUTHOR Virginia’s public schools have a reputation for high standards, an attribute that historically has made serving at a Virginia military installation a favorable assignment for military families.Recently, however, an independent education organization found a significant gap between students’ proficiency scores on the state’s Standards of Learning assessments with their scores on the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests. The discrepancy of about 35 percentage points indicates the Virginia Department of Education has lowered its learning standards to improve students’ proficiency scores, writes Sandy Law, a military wife and mother of three sons, in a commentary in the Richmond Times-Dispatch.“This may make parents feel good for a while. But if it keeps up, it will ultimately hurt Virginia’s reputation and desirability as a duty station,” writes Law, a member of Military Families for High Standards. The issue already has become apparent for military families moving to Virginia. “Whereas many military families used to worry that their students would be behind once they got here, I am not alone in finding that students are actually more proficient than their Virginia peers,” she says.Law urges the state Department of Education to address its “honesty gap” now, given DOD’s interest in shedding some of its excess infrastructure, which stands at an estimated 22 percent. She notes that military leaders previously have cited the quality of local schools as a factor in the services’ basing decisions.“[Virginia] must take the necessary steps to hold students to high levels of proficiency on the Standards of Learning assessments. Military families, and indeed all families who care about strong public schools, are looking to the commonwealth for leadership,” Law concludes.last_img read more

first_imgGalveston police said a woman ran over two people on bicycles in Galveston on Monday night, killing one of them. The driver of the car, identified as 50-year-old Gerilyn Weberlein from Galveston, was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication assault, according to the police department. The charges may be upgraded, because one of the victims died, police said. Officers said the crash happened around 10 p.m. Monday, on 69th Street and Weiss Drive. Five cyclists were heading toward the seawall when Weberlein turned onto 69th street and hit the two men. The victim who died has been identified as Marco Antonio, a 23-year-old, and a recent graduate of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol lifeguard academy.  Share Galveston Island Beach Patrol released the following statement:“I’m very sorry to have to tell you this. From what we know, Marco Antonio, who recently graduated from the Lifeguard Academy, was hit by a car while on his bicycle last night. He was transported to the emergency room, but did not survive. He was part of our family, as are each of you.We all know how important the job we do is. But we need to be sure we’re ok to do that job. We will hold two voluntary group counselling sessions here at Headquarters. The first will be today at 10 am and the second will be tomorrow at the same time. I encourage you to come to one of them. We’ll also have follow up one on one counselling sessions available.I’m sorry for our loss. Our prayers to Marcos’s family and those of you who are his friends. If you need anything let us know.” Weberlein was held on $100,000 bond and was still in custody Tuesday at the Galveston County Jail, according to the Galveston County Daily News. last_img read more

first_img(PhysOrg.com) — “It’s pretty clear that the standard model of physics is not enough to explain all the phenomena in nature,” Tomasz Skwarnicki tells PhysOrg.com. “Through looking at a variety of phenomena – one of them being dark matter – we know that there is a whole set of interactions beyond our standard model.” Skwarnicki’s work doesn’t deal with dark matter, but the Syracuse University physicist has been working on models of physics that go beyond the standard. Like many other scientists, Skwarnicki is interested in the Higgs boson. This is an elementary particle that, according to theory, gives mass to other particles. The Higgs boson is the only particle in the standard model that has yet to be discovered in a physical and experimental sense. Skwarnicki has been associated with the CLEO Collaboration, a group of scientists from a variety of physics programs in the U.S., Britain and Canada. CLEO is based at Cornell University, in Ithaca, New York, and experiments are done at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR).Data from CLEO experiments have been analyzed on an ongoing basis, and a recent article published by the collaboration in Physical Review Letters offers some insight regarding the probability of one of the super symmetric extensions to the standard model. The article is called “Search for Very Light CP-Odd Higgs Boson in Radiative Decays of Y(1S)”, and Skwarnicki points out that it offers new constraints on parameters of Next to Minimal Super Symmetric Model (NMSSM).“Our measures restricted the range of new physics models,” Skwarnicki explains. “We closed some gaps in measurements that had existed before.”Skwarnicki says that while the standard model of physics allows for only one Higgs boson, designated CP-even, the NMSSM suggest seven total Higgs bosons, including a CP-odd boson. “The presence of this CP-odd boson would change all knowledge of all Higgs decays,” he explains. “But to make it work, this CP-odd Higgs boson would need to be very light.” The data analysis done involved looking for evidence of production and decay of this very light Higgs boson. The CLEO team looked for a decay of what is called an Upsilon state, Y(1S), which would produce a CP-odd boson, which would in turn decay to a pair of heavy electron-like particles . “Unfortunately,” Skwarnicki points out, “we did not find this. So the search for experimental evidence of the Higgs boson continues.” He did say that the new bounds established by the experiment, setting a new upper limit, do have an effect on scientific theory. “Our data analysis shows that it would be very hard to speculate with a light Higgs in the Next to Minimal Super Symmetric model. We cannot rule out this model completely, but we ruled out a great deal. Chances are that another theory will have to be used. And the bounds can be used in future ideas of what new interactions beyond the standard model are possible.”Skwarnicki is fairly optimistic that evidence for the existence (or non-existence) of the Higgs boson will be found soon. “The whole point of the Large Hadron Collider, though other experiments will be performed, is basically to create the energy needed to find the Higgs boson,” he points out. “The LHC should be fully operational next year, and then we’ll have a better idea of whether we need to throw everything out the window.”Skwarnicki himself is lined up for an experiment at the LHC. “Non-standard models, which are needed to explain some phenomena, will also be affected by this. What we find out about the Higgs boson in Geneva will apply to non-standard models as well.”Copyright 2007 PhysOrg.com. All rights reserved.
